The more followers you have of the RIGHT PEOPLE, the more sales you are likely to make through social media (though don’t get sucked in to the trap of chasing followers and attracting anyone in! You will only generate more business if your audience is your target market!).
So, how do you attract new followers or connections on social media?
1. Know Your Audience
This is essential! If you create the right content for your audience, they will navigate towards you. And when they look at your content, they’ll be more inclined to hit that follow button. Make sure you drill down to exactly who your ideal audience is. Go deep with this, from top level demographics, down to what excites them, entertains them, educates them and what challenges they face.
2. Create Content Regularly
For new followers to find you from your content, you need to be sharing content! One post a month won’t attract steady flow of new followers! Try to aim for at least 3 pieces of content every week (more preferably!). Though don’t forget, quality is better than quantity. Don’t share something completely irrelevant for the sake of ticking that context box!!
3. Add Relevant Hashtags
Adding relevant hashtags to your content can be a great way for people to find you. Make sure your hashtags are relevant to the content AND to the audience you wish to attract. For example, if you’re B2B, using #dogsofinstagram isn’t going to attract the right followers to you no matter how cute your dog is!
4. Follow Others
While I wouldn’t promote any follow4follow approach, it’s sometimes a good idea to go and seek out those you wish to bring in to your audience and follow them. You could find them through searching hashtags or keywords that they might include in their profile. The next step is then really important for this…
5. Engage With Others
Once you have followed your target audience, you need to make sure you then engage with them. This helps build the relationship, attracts them to look at your profile and hopefully encourages them to follow you. Of course, there should be a reciprocal interest there. Don’t follow and engage for the sake of it!
